FAQ - Roof cleaning in Toledo and surrounding areas

Q: Will algae damage my shingles?

A: Yes if left untreated...Roofs with a lot of algae seem to lose more granules.  As the algae feeds and spreads, it loosens this protective layer of surface granules which play a very important part in solar reflectivity.

Q: What is lichen?

A: Its a fungus and algae working together. It can grow without soil and has a deep penetrating root system that will eventually burrow through your shingle. Lichen does the most damage to your roof. It releases acids that breakdown the shingles granular eating its way through the shingle. Eventually causing leaks.

Q: My roof has moss growing on it. Can it be cleaned?

A: Yes, absolutely. Although moss can get so bad that it looks next to impossible to get off, with our procedure, we are able to tackle even the toughest jobs.

Q: What effect does moss have on my roof?

A: Moss growing on any surface will be greater where areas are shaded and exposed to damp weather. The amount of sunlight is a determining factor of how much growth can amount on your roof. The more sun the less moss.  Moss is more than a cosmetic issue, it holds moisture on roof surfaces speeding up the wear of the shingles.  Freezing temperatures increases frost damage as well by lifting the shingles allowing wind and water underneath. The mosses roots eventually penetrate and separate the roof materials causing damage.

Q: What causes black streaks?

A: Black Streaks are caused by black algae.  This algae feeds on the limestone in the roofing shingle. Its "Bleeding" look is very unattractive and causes damage to your roof. The black algae is caused by shading of trees or just a lack of ultra-violet rays from the sun to kill it off in its early stages. It's most often present on north facing roofs, but can appear anywhere, even where there are no trees. These unattractive streaks are an eyesore to your home and also weaken the granules on your shingles.

Q: How long will it take to see results?

A: Right away.  Many companies come to your house or business, spray on their chemicals, and tell you to wait 60-90 days for the results you expect.  They let the rain do the work.  It's their way to get the job done as quickly as possible so they can move on to the next one.  We take the time to rinse off your roof completely, giving you those amazing results before we leave the job.  In cases where moss or lichen is present, our rinse off process will remove a good portion. What doesn't come off with the rinse will take anywhere from 3 weeks to 2 months to completely disappear.  There simply is no way to remove it all unless power washed off as they are rooted into your shingles.  You NEVER want to have your roof power washed.  The moss or lichen will turn white.  It is dead and over time will de-root, dry up, and come off with wind or rain.  That being said, your roof will still look much better by the time we leave the job. If you notice any areas that need touched up after two months, give us a call, text, or email and we will be there to take care of it asap.  In cases of black algae (black streaks) only, We'll have your roof looking like new by the time we leave.

Q: I only want a portion of my roof cleaned. Can you do that?

A: Yes, although we always recommend having your entire roof cleaned, if you just want a portion cleaned, we can do that.  However, it won't cost a whole lot more to have it completely cleaned and we cannot offer our 3 year guarantee when just doing a portion as spores will be present on the part not cleaned which can result in growths returning much sooner.

Q: Is power washing bad for a roof?

A: Yes, you never want to power wash a roof. Power washing a roof causes damage by loosening the granules and even tearing through the shingle defeating the purpose of having your roof cleaned in the first place.

Q: Are you insured?

A: Yes, we are insured up to $1,000,000 in general liability.

Q:How long can I expect my roof to stay clean after you finish?

A: The average roof cleaning will usually last three or more years depending on the amount of shade around your home. If you are under a lot of trees and the roof stays shady for a good portion of the day, then the algae will return a little faster. Homes that do not have many trees around them tend to stay cleaner much longer.

Q: We're listing our home.  Does your 3 year guarantee carry over to the buyers?

A: Yes

Q: Do you provide any other services?

A: Absolutely.. although we are primarily a roof cleaning company, we also provide complete exterior cleaning including brick, siding, concrete, and decks.
